Normally I find myself disappointed in the way that the human race acts. We fight, shout, ignore people and even hurt them, generally when I hold a door open for someone I get nothing more than a glance – only on rare occasions do I hear the words “thank you”. Recently, just as I had given up on trying to be kind to people, someone I have never even met gave me a book.

He works with my mum and was having a clear out, instead if throwing it away or giving the book to a charity shop this selfless and thoughtful man thought that I could use the book. The only things this man knows about me are the things my mum tells him, and he still thought of me. This small gesture have me a bit more faith in humanity.

It wasn’t planned, this man couldn’t have possibly known of my current feelings on humanity and that is what makes the present all the more special – he did it for no particular reason there was no birthday or tragic event I would need cheering up from, just a normal day for me, until I got this book. I had spent the whole week feeling miserable and believing that no one really cared about me, I even have the experience of having my kind nature taken advantage of by someone I thought was my friend. It’s funny how one man I’ve never met can treat me nicer than some of the people I see every day.

If one person can make a huge impact on my life and feelings then what would happen if we ALL did one nice, selfless and thoughtful thing for someone every day. Nothing too big, maybe just a smile, a note giving somebody a compliment, even just a thank you to that person who holds the door open to you. Personally I am going to be leaving notes around town with compliments written on them to make someone’s day a whole lot better.

What would you do to be nicer to people?
