The Importance of Goal Setting

At the beginning of April I started this blog and the support and response has been overwhelming. When setting my website up I set myself some goals that I have to stick to for a little help to keep me motivated and happy when writing new posts. So today I surpassed 3,500 views which is amazing for having only has this blog for a month and a week, I also only have 29 views – this being the 30th.

All I can say is Wow, Thank you so much everyone for supporting me and reading my blog. Words can’t describe how much I appreciate everyone who reads, likes, comments or shares my posts. As a Writer it is important for me to set goals that I wish to achieve by a certain time and getting to 2,500 views by June was one of them, since I have surpassed that now I am changing the number to 4,500.

Goal setting is important for everyone though, not just writers, if you set yourself no goals you may begin to feel a sense of underachievement which can, in extreme cases, cause depression. Setting small goals for yourself can also help you to feel more productive in the long term and give you something to thrive for. If we have nothing to live up to then we do start to lose a sense of purpose, for those in education or demanding jobs we already have people to set the goals for us, but for people in less demanding jobs it is important to keep yourself productive.

Here are my other goals for the next two years:

Reach 100 WordPress followers by January 2015 –

This is something that I would like because 100 is the my personal first step to 1000 followers. I aim to achieve this goal by writing blog posts like normal and engaging with my readers regularly.

Write 100 Blog posts by December 2014 –

Having a set number of blog posts I plan to write by December is important for me because it helps give me motivation to write and is one of the reasons I write so much, if I didn’t have this I would probably end up scrapping the blog.

Write 20 short stories by March 2015 –

Short Story writing, for me, is a way to warm up for writing my novel. I plan to set them all in one universe that is not our own and I will be posting them here throughout the next 10 months.

Plan and start my novel by June 2015 –

I consider this my most important goal because I would like to, eventually, call novel writing my main career. Hopefully I will find an agent and a publisher by around 2016 so that I will have another thing to tick off my “100 things to do before I die” list.

What are your current goals?
