Birthday

My whole life has led up to this
The biggest disappointment since my very first kiss
It’s not that I’m ungrateful
Really, I’m not
I can’t stop that what is fateful

A day to remember, so everyone thought
Another whole year the world has brought
Surviving this long was difficult
It’s hard to keep the old spark alive

Out comes the cake covered in icing
Topped with one candle to make it enticing
One lonely candle that fizzles and dies
Who wants to see that with their own eyes

Take a closer look, you can see it’s markings
The place that human hands manipulated
We can’t blame them they were only working
But it’s enough to make me feel intimidated

Look at it now, a joke of a thing
Packaged and shipped it’s life is a fling
Separated at last from the others that burn
This one shall never return

Alone it stands slowly melting away
It has served it’s purpose and had it’s day
Moulding in to it’s soft cakey grave
That’s when I realised it was too late to save.
