Your 20’s are supposed to be some of the most exciting times of your life, but sometimes the stress of an ever changing world can get you down and you forget to actually have fun or forget what happiness can feel like. I’m going to share with you some of the things to remember in your 20’s so that you can live the happiest life possible, even when the world is dragging you down.

My List Of Things To Remember In Your 20’s

You have Time

One of the biggest things I struggle with is feeling unaccomplished, but I am only 21. Step back and look at the bigger picture – your life won’t be this way forever. As you grow older your experiences, job, living situation etc. will change and that’s fine. You don’t have to be in the exact right direction at this point in time, you have years to figure it out. So cherish your time instead of spending it stressing about something else.

You’re Not Perfect

You will make mistakes, you will face tough times and you will lose people. One small mistake can have a huge impact on one person’s life, but in 5 years time you probably won’t even think about it. Everyone fucks up (if you’ll excuse my language) it’s how you deal with it that matters. Don’t let yourself get further down the dark hole, find a way to climb back up instead. Friends will come and go, the important thing is that you are happy.

Education isn’t Everything

Failed your exams? Dropped out? It’ll be okay. Get job experience and work your way up, even if you have to start out as a toilet cleaner (pleasant, right?). Job experience is a lot more sought out than education, take it from a graduate who’s degree doesn’t get her anything. A lot of businesses also offer training through work, which might be better suited to you. Don’t count yourself out just because your grades aren’t good.


Do it while you can, do it before you have too many commitments. This one is thrown around a lot, but really once you’ve started your life, house, kids, pets, travelling with be the last thing on your mind. Experience it while you’re young and fit to do it. Go see the world and see other cultures. It can only develop you as a person.

You’re the Only You

YOU are the only person who can decide what YOU want or need. If you want to drop everything and start a new career in engineering, do it. If you want to travel, do it. Don’t let the opinions of others drag you down and stop you from being the best version of yourself. Stop worrying what others will think because at the end of the day you’re the only person who can decide what is best for you.

Enjoy It

There is no shame in having a little fun, as long as it doesn’t take over completely. Go out with friends, do the things you love. As long as you keep the balance between work and fun you’ll be fine. Don’t let the little things get to you, sit back and relax. You’re in the best time of your life where you have little worries and commitments, don’t sweat the small things. Move on and enjoy your existence.

You’re not Alone

In your darkest days there will still be people there for you. Your parents, family, friends, partners. I’ve been suffering with depression and have been overwhelmed by the support I’ve received by everyone in my life. No matter what happens, don’t be afraid to ask for help. There are people who love and appreciate you and WANT to help you.

    I think this is all amazing advice, and I wish I’d realised so much of this in my twenties!
