How To Spend Your Free Time

February 19, 2018

If you’re anything like me, you go to work in the morning, come back in the evening, make some food and veg out. I mean I got into a really bad habit of doing absolutely nothing with my free time other than watch TV which was getting me down and making me feel kinda miserable and unaccomplished. There are ways of avoiding this feeling and below I share what worked for me and how I could better spend my free time.

Get A Hobby In Your Free Time

This might seem obvious, but really – get a hobby. Find something you enjoy doing and will stick to because it will help you think of something other than work. If you enjoy walking, take up walking, if you enjoy knitting take up knitting. Find something that will make YOU feel like you’ve accomplished something in your free time. For me, that is writing, blogging, and photography and well they really help me clear my mind from work.

Clean Your House

This is probably a weird one, but think about how you feel after you’ve done cleaning. Accomplished and better, right? Trust me on this. If you clean your house/flat etc during the week you’ll have more time to do the fun things on your entire night off. I know it’s tempting to slump down and relax after work, but you’ll feel proud of yourself if you clean.

Cook With Your Time

Instead of just heating up food, take the time to prepare and cook a really nice meal for yourself. This way you get food that is better for you and it will taste better because you’ve made it all by yourself. It’s a nice creative way to get your mind off everything else.

Watch a Show

Yes, I did tell you not to do this earlier, but after doing all the other things above wouldn’t it feel great to reward yourself with another episode of a great show? Once you’ve started one you can limit yourself to one (or two, because let’s face it you won’t be able to resist another episode) episode a night.

Organise A Day With Friends

In this day in age, it’s so much easier to rely on social media and phones to keep in touch with your friends, but if you set one day aside to spend with your friends and make sure they do the same then you’ll see them more often and feel generally happier because of it. It stops your whole life from becoming about work and chores.

So that’s my advice on what to do in your spare time. Have anything to add? Please comment below.

These are good tips. I used to come from work and sit home in front of the tv one time, eating the inappropriate things. But I did manage in the end to eat something that would be filling, then allow the treat if I wanted, which usually I would be full and not want it. I don’t have a tv now and I don’t miss it. It will be about a year, give or take not having one and I am better off without it in lots of ways, as well as saving that money for something better, like a holiday or day trip.
My cat, Miley is a handful. She is like a big kid, so she takes my time up, but when I can, I like to read a book. I want to get back into some of my hobbies too, but when Miley is no longer with me, as I don’t plan to have any more cats after her, I shall get back into them, as well as a new one that caught my eye recently.

Im 100% better off without my TV. It encourages me to actually do things other than sitting on front of a screen (says the blogger)

There is crap on tv anyway. I was hardly watching it. I am more interested in films, so I can buy dvds. 🙂 I was without tv for several years once before, so I knew it wouldn’t be a problem doing it again.
