Insomnia is a hard thing to deal with because it leaves you feeling down, groggy and exhausted with no hope of a change, but there are things you can do to help tackle it and get a good nights sleep because believe me, caffiene to get through the day is not the correct solution to tiredness. Below I share advice on how to try and tackle insomnia, or cope with it when it’s happening.
Don’t Bring Work To Bed
Make bed a place for sleep and not work, working in your place of rest is bad because you’ll then associate that place with work meaning every time you go there you’ll get the urge to work which will keep you up at night. Make sure that your bed is cosy, soft and comfortable so you can get well rested.
Don’t Eat After 8pm
Eating that close to bed time can activate your digestive system and that will keep you up, it will also give you energy that can take a couple of hours to catch up meaning you’ll get settled then your brain will wake up. Drinking and eating before bed will also fill your bladder meaning you’ll have to keep getting up for pees.
If we go to bed and wake up at the same times every day our body clock will adjust to the times we’re setting it making it easier for us to get a full eight hours per night. Even setting a bed time routine before sleeping (e.g. brushing your teeth, reading for an hour etc.) will help our bodies and minds think about sleep when we do those activites.
Meditation helps us relax our brains giving us a less stressful time. Meditating before bed can help us forget our worries before lying in bed meaning that we won’t be kept up all night thinking about everything. To get a good nights sleep we need to put our worries and stress aside before bed time.
Exercising throughout the day uses up all of our energy making us a lot more tired at the end of the day and helping us switch off for sleep. If we don’t use up our energy we’ll find ourselves hyper and restless at bed time. Exercise also helps us with our moods which would also help us sleep.
I’m sorry to say that napping throughout the day will not help insomnia. You’d be better to force yourself to stay awake and go to bed at a more reasonable time, that way our body clock can adjust easier and we’ll wake up at a better time the next day.
Get Rid Of Alcohol, Caffeine and Nicotene
Yes, it’s hard, but these subtances are stimulants whose effects can last for over 24 hours. Although alcohol can act as a sedative, that is short lived. You might get a few hours of good sleep, but you are likely to wake up throughout the night and be restless.
