10 Reasons You Should Give Yourself A Break

As humans we often don’t let ourselves take sufficient breaks to let ourselves recuperate from our busy lives. We will take on new things in order to feel like we aren’t wasting our days. This can create an unhealthy cycle where if we are relaxing for even a short amount of time we being to feel guilty for it and give ourselves a hard time for something that is essential. Below I share 10 reasons why you should give yourself a break.

This post is especially important right now as we don’t have an option but to stay inside. Stay safe and healthy and let yourself rest!

1. You Are Not Superhuman

Despite how you may feel sometimes, you are not of the superhuman variety and eventually your mind, body and spirit will fall. The ordinary human body needs rest to survive and sometimes that rest should be for more than an hour at a time. Sleep isn’t enough to recuperate, to get complete rest for your mind you have to take time off your busy schedule and do things like read, play games and watch TV.

2. Tomorrow Awaits

If you have a particularly unproductive day that is okay, because you can always catch up tomorrow when you feel more rested. Didn’t get all your cleaning done? It’s fine, pick it up tomorrow. One unproductive day doesn’t dictate the rest of your week and sometimes you need the break to be even more productive.

3. You Are Not Your Peers

In the social media world it’s become too easy to compare ourselves to our peers and feel insignificant to them because they are doing more or being more productive. The truth is that they have rest days too, they just don’t document them. You are not them and your pace is likely to be different to theirs, so don’t let them make you feel insignificant. Give yourself a break.

4. You Will Feel Less Stress

Taking regular rest days will help you feel less stress in your day to day life because you won’t be constantly “on”. If you never stop and keep on going despite feeling stressed or overwhelmed you will experience burn out and feel even worse or even have to take more rest days. So take a minute and think about your current situation. Maybe it’s time to slow down? Even just for a day.

5. You Will Be More Productive

The best side effect of giving yourself a break is that when you get back in to the groove you will be more productive because you have had plenty of time to miss it all and think of ways you can improve what you are doing in your day to day routine. Reflection time is invaluable when it comes to being more productive and rest days provide the perfect opportunity to reflect on everything.

6. You Will Feel More Stable

Emotions can run high if we are contsantly on the go. Taking regular breaks will help to stabalise your emotions and help you look at situations from a clearer perspective. This not only helps with productivity, but also helps you feel less guilt if you mess up or if you have an unproductive day. Stable emotions help every part of your day to day life which is why it’s essential to take a break.

7. You Will Be Happier

Alongside your emotions stabalising you will also start to feel happier overall. Taking a break allows you to do more of what you enjoy and less of what is expected of you. It also helps you see things clearer helping you make changes to your life that wioll impact your happiness in a really positive way.

8. You Will Sleep better

A lot of people are kept up at night thinking about the things that are worrying them in their everyday lives. Rest days and breaks allow us to learn to switch that part of our brains off to do the things we enjoy, or reflect on our issues more in our waking hours meaning that we can sleep better knowing that things are more in control.

9. Your Health Comes First

Your health should come first above all else and if that means giving yourself a break then that’s what you need to do. Do not let other people manipulate you in to thinking that work should come before your health because with out your health you wouldn’t be able to do all that work. Mental health is just as important as physical health.

10. You Have Earned It

You deserve a break, so take one. We put a lot of pressure on ourselves in all aspects of our lives and often live up to all the expectations we have of ourselves. You have earned a break whether it be for work, motherhood or housework. Do not downplay your productivity and reward yourself for it.

    Thank you so much for this! I’ve been juggling a lot right now and I’m struggling with the fact that I need to take days off but I always feel so much better once I give myself a break and start again tomorrow.

    Yes!! I’ve just come to the end of a very busy couple of weeks (at home, of course) and I was definitely starting to feel the burnout. I’m giving myself a few days off and I’m really looking forward to having the extra time to rest and get some motivation back for when I start again x
