Self-Care Tips For A Better Life

July 8, 2020

Self-care is often overlooked. Especially when life gets busy, but it shouldn’t be. It’s important to ensure we are looking after ourselves otherwise we will get burnt out. Although it can be hard to get into a self-care routine, I highly recommend you do in order to live a better and healthier life. Find a healthy balance between work, socialising and self-care and you’ll feel so much happier and satisfied with life overall.

It’s important to remember that there is no “right” way to practice self-care, you have to find what works for you. Not every single self-care tip will work for you. Experiment to find something that may change your life for the better and don’t get disheartened when the first thing you try doesn’t work.

What Is Self-Care?

Self-care is an activity we actively do to take care of our health. Mental, emotional, and physical health are all important when it comes to self-care. It’s a vital part of improving our moods and any anxiety we may be feeling. Looking after ourselves shouldn’t be ignored, it should be encouraged.

Below I share my 10 top tips for self-care ideas that will help you live a better life today and feel better doing it!

Stay Hydrated

I’d highly recommend drinking a glass of water as soon as you wake up, either in replacement for your morning coffee or before it. We often wake up dehydrated so it’s important to tackle the issue head-on. I’d go as far as preparing the night before by getting a glass of water out and ready by your bedside cabinet (you can use a bottle if it makes you more comfortable). By drinking more water you’ll not only feel healthier, but you’ll find yourself with a lot more energy to get stuff done.

Eat Better, But Don’t Force Foods

It’s so cliched, but eating better really does help your health. As with staying hydrated, you’ll feel healthier and have more energy. Junk food is fine if you have a good balance. If you eat all junk, you’ll feel lethargic and your mental health will suffer. If you start to eat healthier you’ll just feel so much better. Don’t force yourself to eat a salad if you don’t like salad. There are other, more delicious, ways to get your vegetable fix.

Eat Breakfast

Don’t underestimate how important breakfast is. They call it the most important meal of the day for a reason. It gives you the energy to survive the day. Try to schedule in time in the morning to have a healthy breakfast full of protein and carbs so that you can feel better throughout the day.

Meal Plan And Get The Ingredients

Having a meal plan will not only make things easier for you, but it can also save you money. It’s the best way to eat healthier and only do one shop for the entire week instead of doing many little “top-up” shops that always end up more expensive. You can plan all the meals you want, but if you don’t have the ingredients…well, life happens and you may not be able to get them.

Turn Off Your Phone For Self-Care

Even if it’s just for an hour a day. Unplug for the sake of your health because that message can definitely wait. It’s easy to say that we’re “not checking our phones” for an hour, but then the first notification comes up, then another and the temptation takes over and we get sucked into Social Media again. Social Media can be toxic to our health if we use it too much. Try to actively spend time away from it in order to be healthier.

Challenge Your Brain Often

It can be as simple as using Duolingo for an hour a day or taking a new route to work, but try to challenge your brain often. It’s easy to get stuck in the same old routine which may lead to us feeling like we’re in a rut. If we actively challenge ourselves regularly our brain will keep on ticking and improve our mental health. We’re like Sims, if we don’t feel like we’re progressing we become sad. So let your brain progress.

Take Time To Relax For Self-Care

Whether it’s taking a bath, reading, listening to music or watching TV you must take time for yourself. Whatever helps you relax should be made priority for at least 1 hour a day. If we don’t do this we will experience higher levels of stress due to not relaxing after work or college etc. Stress is one of those things that can vastly deteriorate our mental health, so it’s important to balance out the stress with some self-care time.

Exercise Often

Another cliche, but it’s true that exercise helps with our overall health. It can be walking to work, or going to a gym, it doesn’t have to be big, but exercising will help you feel better physically and mentally. The daily recommended amount is 30 minutes or more and I think it’s important that you stick to it. Remember that it doesn’t have to be 30 minutes in a row, you can break it into intervals of 10 minutes and do it throughout the day.

Tidy Your House/Do DIY

Living in a tidy space will help our minds stay clear, but it’s also a great way to stay moving. If we like the space we live in, we will be happier and be able to relax a lot easier. The other side of this is that when finishing DIY projects or finishing tidying a room we get a sense of satisfaction from completing them. Satisfaction helps us to feel productive and keeps our happiness levels up.

Sleep Better For Self-Care

Easier said than done, but sleeping better is important. If you struggle to sleep because your room is too bright, get some blackout curtains. Develop a nighttime routine that includes downtime before bed, this will help you get to sleep quicker and stay asleep. It may take some time and some experimenting to get this right, but simple things like taking down-time before bed can help you feel better overall.

Turning off my phone every evening has been the best self-care practice I’ve ever adopted! I didn’t realise how much of a toll social media was taking on my mental health until I noticed the difference once I cut down on my exposure to my phone.

I love this post Jodie! I agree about turning your phone off once in a while, everyday when my phone needs charging, I charge it in another room so there’s no temptation in using it while it’s charging! These self care tips you’ve listed are so effective! x
