Self-acceptance is often brushed to the side when we talk about self-care and mental wellbeing, but it’s possibly one of the most vital parts of maintaining a healthy mind. Self-acceptance is about learning to love yourself and the things that make you stand out from the crowd. It’s so easy to fall into a negative mindset when it comes to thinking about ourselves, and even harder to feel truly comfortable in our own skin. Below I share my top tips for accepting yourself for you and learning to love those quirky details that others like you for.

Focus On Your Strengths To Improve Self-Acceptance

Instead of thinking about all the bad things about yourself, try to change the narrative to be positive. Instead of “I don’t do this well” think about what you are good at “I’m not the best at ____, but I am very good at ____”. Once you start thinking in a more positive manner, self-acceptance will be much easier to achieve. I can guarantee there are people out there wishing they were as good as you at something, the same way you envy them for what they’re good at.

Set Realistic Goals

If you continue to set unrealistic goals that you will never be able to achieve you’ll never fully accept yourself. You’ll feel inferior and unaccomplished which will make you feel down. If you set yourself realistic goals you can definitely achieve you’ll start to feel more motivated, which in turn will help you love yourself more. Having something to work towards with your self-acceptance will help as well. Set yourself small goals like “be kind to me” and eventually the goals will become naturally more complex.

Practice Self-Care To Help With Self-Acceptance

Self-care is so important for mental health. It’s about doing things that nourish your brain and help you feel better overall. This is vital to self-acceptance. Look after yourself, eat right, exercise, and treat yourself to a nice long bath at the end of the day. Self-care is the best way to learn to love and accept yourself because if you’re taking better care of yourself, you’re more likely to feel happy, enjoy your appearance, and also feel more loved.

Confront Your Fears And Past Mistakes

Everyone has baggage. You do too, even if you’d rather ignore it. Learn to confront your fears and bad past in order to move past it. Accept and move on, don’t let it brew away in you and eventually explode and pull you into a negative mindset. You can’t accept yourself until you accept your fears and past mistakes. Yes, it will take some time and maybe even some therapy but it can be done and once you’ve confronted the negative head-on, you can begin to focus on the positive and learn to accept yourself, quirks and all.

Accept Your Imperfections

Often seen as faults, your imperfections are part of what makes you unique. Nobody on this earth is perfect, not one person. You are no exception. Learn to accept your imperfections for what they are? Clumsy? Socially Awkward? Miranda has made a career out of it. What you may have seen as faults, she embraced and made them her unique qualities in order for them to be endearing. Once you accept these things about yourself, people will show you that they like those things about you.

Self-Acceptance

Have A Friends Cleanse

It’s never nice to cut people out, but sometimes it’s necessary. If you find yourself surrounded by people that make you feel down by constantly pointing out what’s wrong with you, drop them. It’s not worth the self-hatred it causes and you can definitely do better friendship wise. Find new friends who lift you up and celebrate your accomplishments instead of highlighting your mistakes, and make sure you do the same for them!

Become More Self Aware To Improve Self-Acceptance

This is the hardest thing on the list. Learn to notice your patterns, thoughts, feelings, and pain. Welcome them. Separate yourself from them and it will help you and others around you love and accept you more. This helps you set the intention that you are willing to accept the bad and the good in yourself and appreciate that it doesn’t define who you are as a person. Don’t let others define you that way either, you can regain control of your own image this way.

Lean On Your Support System

On the days where you can’t find self-acceptance for yourself, ask others to help you. Your nearest and dearest will be on hand to help you with your self-esteem and remind you who you really are. As stated above, find friends who uplift you. Those relationships can make or break you learning to accept yourself. It’s important to create a small group of high-quality relationships as opposed to friending everyone.

Don’t Focus On Other People’s Progress

There will always be someone better off than you or progressing faster than you. Don’t focus on their progress, focus on your own. If you spend your whole life worrying that you aren’t living your life correctly, you won’t. And you will never accept yourself. We all have our own paces and that is absolutely fine, it’s just important to remember not to tear those people down, but to praise them. If you do that they will praise you back when you accomplish things.

It really is easy to get stuck in a negative mindset. When it comes to my life, I find it really hard to look at any positives as I’m quite the nihilist. But I can easily see the positives in everyone else.

It’s also good advice to set realistic goals, and to make that easier you should try looking up SMART goals
