How To Keep A Positive Mental Attitude

positive mental attitude

During this difficult time we’re all facing, I’ve had an overwhelming amount of people tell me that they just can’t keep a positive mental attitude anymore. I don’t blame them and I have to admit I’ve been feeling exactly the same in recent weeks. How can we stay positive when the world has basically halted? So I started to put together a list of different ways we can all keep a positive mental attitude, below I share 10 of the tips I’ve come up with.

Turn Off The News

Sure, it’s good to know what’s going on all around the world, but do we need to see it throughout all hours of the day? This goes for seeing the news on social media too! If we’re constantly reading negative news stories, we’ll begin to feel negative ourselves. The best way to do this is to disable notifications popping up on your phone for all news apps or social media platforms. This helps keep our minds busy with other, more positive things. Twitter actually allows you to mute words, so you won’t see any tweets containing those words, so if you find that any particular news stories are getting you down, mute the words on social media.

Learn To Encourage Yourself To Maintain A Positive Mental Attitude

This is something that may be hard for so many people, but it’s all about being positive about yourself. Focus on your successes rather than your faults or failures. If you have done something good, verbally praise yourself to help it sink in more. You could even go further and look at yourself in the mirror and praise yourself so that it truly sinks in. When we look at ourselves in a more positive way, our thoughts naturally change to fit this narrative. This is good because our thought processes can be so negative and make us feel like we’re not good enough when we’re brilliant.

Surround Yourself With Positive People

If we have been friends with someone for a long time, we may not notice that they are such a negative impact on our lives. It may benefit you to sit down and look at the friends in your life that uplift you and the ones that drag you down and take a small break from the ones that drag you down, or ask if they are okay. Remember that the people creating a negative impact may have something else going on and just need time to sort their stuff out. So ask them if they are okay and vow to become more positive together, or if they continue to criticize you and put you down, consider cutting them out.

Look For Opportunities In Bad Situations

Another tough one, but definitely worth it. It’s so easy and natural to believe that something is bad, and only bad, forgetting that good things can come from it. The thing about bad situations is that they are inevitable in life and we definitely can’t stop them, but we can change the way we frame them. So instead of thinking that things will be bad forever, focus on the things you can do to better the situation and work towards them. There is always light at the end of the tunnel, it’s just about remembering that and focusing on that light to get you through the dark. It won’t always work, of course, but even if it helps a little it’s worth it.

Remember That Everyone Is Trying

No one else has life completely figured out, even if they say they do. We’re all still trying to figure everything out how to get through and live a decent life, so don’t feel bad if you see someone doing better than you. I can guarantee they look at your life and wish they could do something that you’re amazing at. So remind yourself that the perfect lives you see on Instagram, Facebook and Twitter aren’t real and beneath the photos are people just like you, trying to figure it all out.

Live More In The Moment

Don’t get so lost in the past or future that you miss your present. Living in the moment is the best way to leave the worry of the future and the regrets of the past behind. With social media and instant photos, it’s so easy to forget that we are living in the now as well. So put your phone down and get rid of all distractions, put your mind in the here and now, and truly enjoy the moment you’re living in.
