There is nothing worse than being in the middle of a great date and the conversation suddenly dying. First dates are so nerve-wracking as it is, never mind having to rack your brain for any type of conversation. You want to be prepared for your first date without sounding scripted. It’s fine to know what you want to learn about their lives, but don’t spend time writing it down and reading it subtly on the night. That will only ruin the flow of conversation. There are plenty of topics you can cover at your first time meeting.
First Date Conversation Starters
“What TV Shows Do You Watch?”
This is a classic question. It shows you whether they enjoy comedy or are a bit more on the serious side. You can also open it up to films, discuss your favourite actors and directors. If they don’t own a TV then that’s a whole other conversation you can have.
“What’s Something I Wouldn’t Guess About You?”
It’s a little flirtatious, but open-ended enough that you could get a really interesting answer. A good way to get to know your Tayside Dating site meetup in ways that other people don’t. Remember to come up with one of your own though because they will ask for yours too.
“If You Won The Lottery, What Would You Spend The Money On?”
This question is my favourite. It shows their values. They may say charity, a house, spend it on their family or maybe they just want to buy something really extravagant. Would you rather be with someone who would spend their money on their family (and some on themselves of course), or themselves?
“What Is Your Dream Job?”
Another favourite of mine. This one shows their passion and what inspires or motivates them. It will also give you an insight into what they may be working towards. After all, if you’re Tayside Dating to find the love of your life then you’re going to want to find someone you want to support to get to their dreams.
“Who Do You Look Up To The Most?”
A question where the answer could go in many different directions. You want to know the type of person that your date strives to be and if they are looking up to someone you really can’t get on board with then it’s better to know now than months down the road.
“What Are Your Friends Like?”
Another good variation of this is “What do you and your friends do together?”. This will give you more of an idea of what this person does for fun and also how much they value the people around them. If they say they don’t have any friends then you have to ask yourself why that is and figure out if you want to pursue this.
“What Is The Best Place You’ve Travelled To?”
If you start dating this person, you’ll presumably be taking holidays with them. You want to find out what they enjoy on holidays and why. If they enjoy drinking holidays and you don’t then it may be a case of having separate holidays or finding a compromise. You may also want to consider whether you are interested in the same things.
Conversation Starters Aren’t Everything
You have to listen to your date too. Ask them follow-up questions and make sure they know that you’re interested in them. If you aren’t listening they will see it as a sign of disinterest. It also means you can report everything back to your friends and they can help you decide whether date number two will be going ahead.
Don’t Stick To Conversation Starters
If the conversation is flowing, don’t change it to as one of your prepared questions. Let it flow and live in the moment. It’s better that the conversations are flowing than if you are having to muster up topics from a list.
