If there is anything that we have taken on-board over the past year, is that looking after ourselves is so important. This is not just about our physical health but our mental health too. But what is mental wellness and how can we continue to look after it as we navigate life post-pandemic?
The World Health Organization (WHO) has a definition of mental wellness describing it as a state of well-being where individuals come to know their own abilities, and can cope with life, can work productively, and can make a contribution to their environment or community. Is this just a far off dream or something that is actually doable? If you want to improve your mental wellness, all from the comfort of your own home, then here are some things to think about.
Having a journal to write in can be so good for your mind. Not only can you use it as a space to write down how you are feeling or things of note to remember from the day, but you can record thoughts and feelings, and even things that you need to do, so that they are no longer on your mind. It can be a place to write down lists of gratitude, which can help your mindset, or just writing down thoughts and feelings. It can be a cathartic thing to do and can go a long way to help your mental wellbeing.
If you are feeling low, then you need to make sure that you are doing all that you can to help yourself. One of those things is exercise. You may not feel able to leave the house, but there are things that you can do from home, with so many apps and YouTube videos with workouts that you can follow. You could also think about something like yoga, which is physical, but not high impact, and it does allow you to relax somewhat and have more of a mindful practice.
It may not be possible for everyone, but if you are looking to improve your mental wellbeing from the comfort of your own home, then you should consider making it an environment that is conducive to comfort and wellbeing. This could start with making sure the room is the right temperature. How much do you want to just go back to bed when the house is freezing? Checking your heating and cooling system, and having the number of a 24 hour AC service could help. You should also consider how cluttered a space is, because it can be hard to relax when you’re surrounded by mess and junk.
From making sure that you drink plenty of water or moisturise your face before you go to bed, to having bath or lighting candles, the most important aspect of any self-care routine is making sure that it is just that, part of a routine. When you can include different activities that will help to do good things for your mental wellness, then you will come to know what to expect, helping downtime and a routine of reassurance. It really can have cumulative benefits over time.
